of Houghton Lake.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1321\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1321\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/100_0685.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1321\" title=\"100_0685\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/100_0685-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Exterior of the Rocking Chair souvenir shop\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1321\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Exterior of the Rocking Chair souvenir shop<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Acting on advice from Angie Serafini, we stopped at The Rocking Chair gift shop. \u00a0The main purpose was to get some fudge for ourselves and a block for me to take to work next week. \u00a0The gift shop itself reminded me of the kinds of places we would hit when I was kid &#8212; lots of different trinkets with Houghton Lake printed on them, a few T-shirts, puzzles, animals made out of shells glued together, etc. \u00a0It really felt like stepping back in time.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1322\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1322\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/100_0687.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1322\" title=\"100_0687\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/100_0687-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Exterior of Joe's Coney Island shop\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1322\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Exterior of Joe&#039;s Coney Island shop<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We stopped for Coney dogs at Joe&#8217;s Coney. \u00a0They were quite good; although, they were a bit pricey. \u00a0They were good enough that I stopped by there the next day to get a couple more for Tommy and me for lunch.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1323\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1323\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/100_0693.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1323\" title=\"100_0693\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/100_0693-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Indian Pow Wow at Zubler's Gift Shop\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1323\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Indian Pow Wow at Zubler&#039;s Gift Shop<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We had seen signs and flyers all over town for Zubler&#8217;s Indian gift shop. \u00a0We noticed that they advertise an Indian pow wow with dancing on Thursdays. \u00a0Though we hadn&#8217;t planned our schedule to make it, we drove up just as the pow wow was going to begin. \u00a0I have to say that it was sort of lame, having the production values of an unrehearsed, school play, but it was the kind of kitschy show you talk about for years afterward. \u00a0This gift shop too was like stepping back in time.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1324\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1324\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/100_0695.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1324\" title=\"100_0695\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/100_0695-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"One of the markers of our resort to help locate it from the lake\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1324\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of the markers of our resort to help locate it from the lake<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We returned to our cabin to relax for a couple hours and have dinner. \u00a0Candy had bought a pan of baked ziti to throw in the oven. \u00a0Baking it for two hours in the oven had the effect of heating up the cabin. \u00a0We played dominoes for a while and then decided to head out for some miniature golf. \u00a0We swung by to see if the Serafinis wanted to join us, but they were all out to dinner.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1325\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1325\" style=\"width: 283px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/100_0697.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1325\" title=\"100_0697\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/100_0697-283x300.jpg\" alt=\"Putt-R-Golf\" width=\"283\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1325\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Putt-R-Golf<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Putt-R-Golf opened in 1951. \u00a0It is the longest miniature golf course in Michigan. \u00a0Some of the fairways were incredibly long. \u00a0Someone opened a Pirate&#8217;s Cove (franchise) course right next door. \u00a0The woman running Putt-R-Golf, who had just inherited the place from her recently deceased mother, said that Pirate&#8217;s Cove was having little impact on Putt-R-Golf because of the loyalty of her patrons. \u00a0People staying in our resort said that their grandparents played at Putt-R-Golf. \u00a0While the course was in need of some repairs, it was interesting. \u00a0We had a good time. \u00a0I regret not having taken the kids to Greenfield Village, but we enjoyed the day more than we perhaps would have enjoyed six hours of driving, and there will be future opportunities to visit The Village.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We had intended to spend this day driving to Dearborn to visit Greenfield Village. \u00a0We decided that we really wouldn&#8217;t enjoy six hours of driving to spend five hours at The Village. \u00a0Instead we decided to hit some of the souvenir stands up and down &#8220;the main drag&#8221;
