After mining enough gold to get rich, he turned it into a tourist attraction.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1787\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1787\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/100_2499.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1787\" title=\"100_2499\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/100_2499-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Tommy inspecting copper &quot;growing&quot; from the wall of the cave\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1787\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tommy inspecting copper &quot;growing&quot; from the wall of the cave<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the picture (above) Tommy is looking at how copper is leaching from the rock and forming grass-like fingers. \u00a0We thought it was some sort of moss, but in fact it was copper. \u00a0We saw quartz, iron, gold, silver, and platinum in the rock.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1788\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1788\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/100_2501.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1788\" title=\"100_2501\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/100_2501-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Panning for gold\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1788\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Panning for gold<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After the underground tour, the folks running the mine take everyone out for an hour of panning gold. \u00a0They make sure there is real gold in the dirt to be panned. \u00a0The kids found small flakes, the guys called flower gold. \u00a0We could have spent all day finding enough of the flower gold to amount to anything, but the kids had fun. \u00a0It was a nice way to break up the drive before continuing to our hotel in Spokane, WA.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This day was mainly a travel day to get us from Glacier to striking distance of Mount Ranier, but to break up the monotony of the drive we stopped to spend 90 minutes at the Crystal Gold mine in Kellog, MT.
