COPE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After breakfast we met some of the instructors for COPE. \u00a0COPE is challenging outdoor personal experience. \u00a0It seems to consist of three phases. \u00a0Day one consists of games and activities centered around getting to know the other participants. \u00a0Some of these games were just fun, like Ninja, but others were team-based problem solving exercises.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1975\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1975\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/IMGP1557.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1975\" title=\"IMGP1557\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/IMGP1557-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"Untangling the inhuman knot\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1975\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Untangling the inhuman knot<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In this exercise the scouts stood in a circle holding onto handkerchiefs. \u00a0Then in a series of moves, the instructors moved handkerchiefs from one hand, through the center, and back to the scout. \u00a0This created a pretty intricate &#8220;Gordian knot.&#8221; \u00a0This used to be done holding hands as a &#8220;human knot,&#8221; but apparently someone dislocated a shoulder, so they have gone to this technique. \u00a0The scouts worked for a better part of an hour trying to step into and out of handkerchiefs to untie the know without letting go of the handkerchiefs.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1972\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1972\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/IMGP1555.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1972\" id=\"caption-attachment-1972\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Part of the inhuman knot<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The other half of our kids participated in an exercise to get their whole group across an acid lava spikey pit of doom, \u00a0The only object that could touch the acid lava without being destroyed were the two four-by-fours with ropes attached to them. \u00a0It was interesting to see how the kids from our crew took charge early in these games.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1969\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1969\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a doom<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The obvious solution is to stand on the boards and coordinate walking with them. \u00a0This is difficult, but possible. \u00a0Maddie came up with the idea of using them as balance beams instead, getting as many folks as possible on one beam and then passing the beam from behind them to in front of them. <a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/IMGP1544.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1970\" title=\"IMGP1544\" \/><\/a>In the end, the group ended up using both techniques as some of the scouts were more comfortable with one technique than the other.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1974\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">What a studly guy!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>They have a very nice volleyball court at Broad Creek with well-marked boundaries. \u00a0We joined the staff, who were playing climbing area in time to make it back to change into Class A shirts for the flag ceremony and dinner. \u00a0After dinner we participated in a conservation project. \u00a0Our project was to use hedge cutters and scythe-like weed whippers to clear portions of the yellow trail which had become overgrown. \u00a0Tom, Ryan, and I spent a fair amount of time trying to cut trees that had fallen across the path with two inappropriately-small hand saws. \u00a0It was good for working off a few dinner calories but was not the most effective way to clear the trail!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1997\"
