Those kids don&#039;t look happy at all!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On Saturday at Historicon 2015, Eric Schlegel hosted the 5th Armies for Kids Giveaway game. \u00a0The event is for kids under 10 years old. \u00a0Each younger gamer who participates in the event walks away with enough PAINTED figures (for both sides) to run a game at home, some terrain, some unpainted figures, some paints, etc.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_1555.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4221\" title=\"IMG_1555\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_1555-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s event featured 40mm ACW figures, mostly Sash and Saber, through the kind donations of many folks. \u00a0<strong>Maynard Creel, Ed Mohrmann, Phil Kearnan, Keven Pinder, <\/strong>and<strong> Eric Von Reyn<\/strong> provided the figures. \u00a0Ed hired Phil to paint all the Confederates that Ed purchased, and Phil subsequently donated and painted the mounted officers. \u00a0<strong>Chris Johnson<\/strong> once again provided terrain for the kids to take \u00a0home. \u00a0These included wooden fences and a \u00a0paper bridge over which to fight. \u00a0I realized after I got home that I need took any good close-up pictures of the figures that Phil painted, but they were amazing. \u00a0The HAWKs held a couple of painting bees during the year to paint up all the unpainted figures that had been donated. \u00a0Our figures did not look nearly as good as Phil&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_1553.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4219\" title=\"IMG_1553\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_1553-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Eric used his ACW rules he has created specifically for kids games. \u00a0They flow nicely, and the kids always have good time. \u00a0Eric&#8217;s rules also include his &#8220;test of history education in US schools.&#8221; \u00a0When a specific card is drawn from the deck, he asks one side or the other an ACW history question. \u00a0If the kids on that side get it correctly, one unit gets an extra activation. \u00a0If they don&#8217;t get it correctly, the other side gets a chance to &#8220;steal&#8221; the extra action. \u00a0I learned a lot from these nine year olds, like the &#8220;fact&#8221; that Grant commanded the Army of Northern Virginia and that Robert E. Lee was the president of the Confederacy.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4218\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4218\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_1554.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4218\" title=\"IMG_1554\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_1554-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"A dad provides tactical advice to a gamer in training.\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4218\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A dad provides tactical advice to a gamer in training.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The game involved both sides trying to capture the hill seen in the center of the picture (above). \u00a0The Rebs got there first, but they were eventually driven off by the Yanks. \u00a0The boy on the far left of the picture was the last Reb in the game. \u00a0His single remaining figure killed five or six Ynaks before being gunned down.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_1552.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4217\" title=\"IMG_1552\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_1552-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This was our fifth such giveaway event.<\/p>\n<div id=\"yui_3_15_0_1_1437392936767_2119\">1 &#8211; 15mm SYW metal\u00a0(Historicon 2013)<\/div>\n<div id=\"yui_3_15_0_1_1437392936767_2136\">4 &#8211; 30mm Napoleonic metal\u00a0(Historicon 2014)<\/div>\n<div id=\"yui_3_15_0_1_1437392936767_2138\">5 &#8211;
