game\" width=\"512\" height=\"384\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5411\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A group of kids playing in Dave&#039;s &quot;The Dragon is Dead&quot; game<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Dave ran a game using <em>Blood and Swash<\/em> from the <em>Big Battles for Little Hands<\/em> book. \u00a0A dragon has been slain on a remote island. \u00a0Before the official troops arrive, the &#8220;government&#8221; game\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5412\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Another shot of &quot;The Dragon is Dead&quot; game<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5413\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5413\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/IMGP1110.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5413\" title=\"IMGP1110\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/IMGP1110-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"A view of the other side of the table\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5413\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A view of the other side of the table<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I don&#8217;t which kid won the game, but they all seemed to have a really good time.<\/p>\n<h2>Armies for Kids Project<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5414\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5414\" style=\"width: 448px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/IMGP1115.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-5414 \" title=\"IMGP1115\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/IMGP1115.jpg\" alt=\"Getting ready for the Armies for Kids game\" width=\"448\" height=\"297\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5414\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Getting ready for the Armies for Kids game<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The showcase event was our annual Armies for Kids Giveaway. \u00a0The game is restricted to kids 10 and younger. \u00a0This year it was a WWII game using <em>Milk and Cookies Rules<\/em> from <em>Big Battles for Little Hands.<\/em>\u00a0 The paper houses you see in this picture were lovingly hand crafted by Chris Johnson, as were the hills. \u00a0The figures and tanks had been donated to the HAWKs. \u00a0Through a number of painting seasons we painted and based the units.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5415\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5415\" style=\"width: 448px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/IMGP1117.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-5415 \" title=\"IMGP1117\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/IMGP1117.jpg\" alt=\"Plotting their next moves\" width=\"448\" height=\"297\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5415\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Plotting their next moves<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>Milk and Cookies Rules<\/em> were written for kids as young as five years old. \u00a0It has all the basic elements: \u00a0movement, fire, and morale. \u00a0It is written for periods ranging from ancient warfare to WWII. \u00a0Units consist of four bases. \u00a0The rules use six-sided dice. \u00a0There are sometimes saves if the target unit is in cover. \u00a0Pretty straightforward stuff. \u00a0The game lasts about 90 minutes.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5417\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5417\" style=\"width: 448px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/IMGP1116.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-5417 \" title=\"IMGP1116\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/IMGP1116.jpg\" alt=\"Concentrate!\" width=\"448\" height=\"297\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5417\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Concentrate!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The young man in the black shirt spent a fair amount of time marching and countermarching with his tanks, but he seemed to have a great time.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5416\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5416\" style=\"width: 448px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/IMGP1118.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-5416 \" title=\"IMGP1118\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/IMGP1118.jpg\" alt=\"Nah! They aren&#039;t having ANY fun.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The girl on the right was probably her side&#8217;s MVP. \u00a0At one point she had troops in both of the two buildings in the middle of the table, which was the objective of the game. \u00a0While she was eventually driven out of the far one, she remained focused on the objective throughout the game. \u00a0She reminded me of my own daughter who when she was younger would often win at these convention games &#8212; and games not set aside for kids &#8212; by staying focused on the objective.<\/p>\n<p>When the game is over, the kids take home the army they played with during the game. \u00a0They also take home an opposing army, a set of hills, a set of buildings, and the rules and quick reference sheets. \u00a0They also get a tote bag full of other goodies, like paints, brushes, rulers, and dice. \u00a0That is what is mean by Armies for Kids. \u00a0When the game is over, they have everything they need to play war-games with their buddies at home. \u00a0Every once in a while we get some feedback from a parent that the armies from previous years are getting a lot of use. \u00a0We would love to hear from a teenager or young adult about their experiences after Armies for Kids.<\/p>\n<p>This has been a huge success. \u00a0You should see the looks on their faces when we give them all the goodies at the end. \u00a0Most of the parents know what&#8217;s coming, but the giveaway is a complete surprise to most of the kids.<\/p>\n<p>I think this is the sixth Armies for Kids Giveaway we have done as a club in as many Historicons.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5420\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5420\" style=\"width: 448px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/IMGP1119.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-5420 \" title=\"IMGP1119\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/IMGP1119.jpg\" alt=\"Some of the players in the Armies for Kids game\" width=\"448\" height=\"297\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5420\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Some of the players in the Armies for Kids game<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>War Rocket<\/h2>\n<p>After Armies for Kids, I ran another 90 minute kids&#8217; game, using the <em>War Rocket<\/em> rules from Hydra Miniatures. \u00a0We had a lot of fun. \u00a0One side had to blow up some important satellites while the other side had to defend them.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5419\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5419\" style=\"width: 448px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/IMGP1127.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-5419 \" title=\"IMGP1127\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/IMGP1127.jpg\" alt=\"A second view of the War Rocket kids' game\" width=\"448\" height=\"297\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5419\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A second view of the War Rocket kids&#039; game<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5418\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5418\" style=\"width: 448px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/IMGP1126.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-5418 \" title=\"IMGP1126\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/IMGP1126.jpg\" alt=\"A &quot;fur ball&quot; during the War Rocket game\" width=\"448\" height=\"297\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5418\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A &quot;fur ball&quot; during the War Rocket game<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>These kid-focused games take a lot of work and a certain amount of patience, but they are fun. \u00a0They are our attempt to do something about the &#8220;graying of the hobby&#8221; other than grousing about it on TMP.<\/p>\n<h4>In addition to these three games, Geoff Graff also ran his ever popular Lego pirate game. \u00a0Sadly, I didn&#8217;t get a picture of that game.<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Most games put on by the HAWKs are kid friendly, but we often dedicate a table in the HAWKS room to games specifically targeted at younger gamers. \u00a0This year we put on three of them.
