{"id":607,"date":"2011-08-03T01:10:11","date_gmt":"2011-08-03T01:10:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/?p=607"},"modified":"2011-08-03T01:10:11","modified_gmt":"2011-08-03T01:10:11","slug":"2011-vacation-second-day-mystic-sea-port","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bucksurdu.com\/bucksblog\/2011\/08\/03\/2011-vacation-second-day-mystic-sea-port\/","title":{"rendered":"2011 Vacation Second Day: Mystic Sea Port"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The second day of our trip we drove about 90 minutes to Mystic, Connecticut. \u00a0Mystic Seaport is an outdoor museum featuring a whaling ship, Captain Morgan, which is under restoration. \u00a0In addition, there are a number of shops set up like a typical New England sea port village, such as a cooper, rope maker, printer, smithy (for making the metal parts of a ship), and a shop where wood is steamed and then bent to make boats. \u00a0All of the shops had interpreters and\/or docents who did an excellent job discussing their &#8220;trade&#8221; with visitors.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_611\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-611\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/100_0438.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-611\" title=\"100_0438\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/100_0438-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"View across the river from Mystic Seaport\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-611\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">View across the river from Mystic Seaport<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One of the interesting exhibits was a history of light houses on three large monitors. \u00a0This display was inside the light house shown below. \u00a0It was an interesting presentation. \u00a0One of the interesting facts we learned is that many lighthouses have different paint schemes, called day marks, so that they can be distinguished in daylight as well as by different light patters at night.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_610\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-610\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/100_0437.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-610\" title=\"100_0437\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/100_0437-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Small light house at the end of the point\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-610\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Small light house at the end of the point<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_612\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-612\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/100_0439.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-612\" title=\"100_0439\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/100_0439-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Tommy and me with some of Mystic Seaport in the background\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-612\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tommy and me with some of Mystic Seaport in the background<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At the shop where sextants, telescopes, and clocks were made and repaired, Sammy signed up for &#8220;Nav Quest.&#8221; \u00a0This was an activity that involved finding a series of points around the village using a spyglass and compass. \u00a0Sammy did a nice job of following the directions and finding all four points.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_613\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-613\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/100_0444.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-613\" title=\"100_0444\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/100_0444-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Tommy assisting Sammy with &quot;Nav Quest&quot;\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-613\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tommy assisting Sammy with &quot;Nav Quest&quot;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One of the interesting exhibits was rope making. \u00a0It turns out that the only missing requirement for Tommy to earn the Pioneering merit badge was making rope. \u00a0We learned about how at each phase of the process (fibers to yarn to strands to rope to cable) the material is twisted in the opposite direction. \u00a0It is these opposite twists working against each other that cause the rope not to unravel.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_614\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-614\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/100_0460.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-614\" title=\"100_0460\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/100_0460-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Tommy and Sammy making rope\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-614\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tommy and Sammy making rope<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After witnessing the man overboard drill in the bay, Tommy and I helped hoist up the 2000-lb lifeboat. \u00a0This involved winding rope around the capstan and pushing it around in circles while one of the crew led us in sea shanties. \u00a0It wasn&#8217;t as difficult as I thought it might be;
