{"id":6596,"date":"2017-07-17T12:15:59","date_gmt":"2017-07-17T12:15:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/?p=6596"},"modified":"2017-07-17T12:15:59","modified_gmt":"2017-07-17T12:15:59","slug":"combat-patrol-games-run-at-historicon-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bucksurdu.com\/bucksblog\/2017\/07\/17\/combat-patrol-games-run-at-historicon-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"Combat Patrol Games Run at Historicon 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There were several Combat Patrol(TM) games run at Historicon 2017.<\/p>\n<h2>French vs. Italians 1940<\/h2>\n<p>The first was a Thursday game run by Eric Schlegel set in southern France in 1940. \u00a0It involved the Italians attacking the French. \u00a0I only managed to get one poor picture of this game. \u00a0You can see that the Italians had to advance across open ground to get to the French positions or slog through the woods. \u00a0Despite some success on the Italian right flank, the game was judge a French victory.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6597\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6597\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/IMG_3691.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6597\" title=\"IMG_3691\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/IMG_3691-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6597\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Italians attack French positions in 1940.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>The Bocage<\/h2>\n<p>I then ran two bocage games on Friday. \u00a0Don and I set up the bocage table and then ran three games on it. \u00a0I ran Combat Patrol(TM) in the morning and evening. \u00a0In the afternoon Don used to table to run a game using &#8220;brand X&#8221; rules (Battleground WWII). \u00a0In both of my scenarios the Germans were allowed hidden setup, and the Americans were tasked to clear the road. \u00a0Unfortunately I was busy running the game and didn&#8217;t remember to take very many pictures. \u00a0The ones I have don&#8217;t tell a coherent narrative, but you can at least see some eye candy.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6598\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6598\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/IMG_3698.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6598\" title=\"IMG_3698\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/IMG_3698-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6598\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An American halftrack has a bad day.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6599\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6599\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/IMG_3699.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6599\" title=\"IMG_3699\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/IMG_3699-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6599\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Germans along a hedge row managed to knock out one or two American vehicles and withstand some infantry close assaults.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After the first scenario, every US vehicle had been knocked out, and the Germans had taken few casualties, so it was a decisive German victory.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6600\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6600\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/IMG_3703.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6600\" title=\"IMG_3703\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/IMG_3703-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6600\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Don&#039;s &quot;brand X&quot; game on the bocage table. The Pz II survived to the end of the game despite a jammed turret and repeated infantry close assaults. II drops back under close assault from American infantry.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The first running of this scenario was a decisive victory for the Germans. \u00a0The Americans attacked across a wide front, weren&#8217;t very aggressive, and never were able to mass on a decisive point. \u00a0The second instance was much closer. \u00a0The Americans massed on the German right flank and enjoyed initial success. \u00a0Then they got bogged down fighting for the farm house in the center of the table rather than bypassing it. \u00a0The game was a marginal German victory.<\/p>\n<h2>Action around Pomme du Terre<\/h2>\n<p>We then set up a French village, called Pomme du Terre, and ran four games on it to amortize the effort of laying out all the buildings. \u00a0We ran three Combat Patrol(TM) games on the terrain and one with &#8220;brand X.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6605\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6605\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/IMG_3710.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6605\" title=\"IMG_3710\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/IMG_3710-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6605\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The town of Pomme du Terre being set up for four scenarios. The town is almost exclusively Crescent Root buildings with a Sally 4th corner cafe and flagstone road, and Battlefield Terrain Concepts trees.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6606\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6606\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/IMG_3718.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6606\" title=\"IMG_3718\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/IMG_3718-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6606\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Another view of the town<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>1918<\/h3>\n<p>Duncan used the town for Germans vs. Americans in 1918. \u00a0I was running one of the bocage games while this game was going on, so I only snapped two quick pictures. \u00a0Apparently the American platoon was pretty badly shot up trying to take the town from the Germans.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/IMG_3711.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6607\" title=\"IMG_3711\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/IMG_3711-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In these pictures you can see that Duncan uses flat disks from Fantasy Flight Games to mark morale checks. \u00a0You can also see that Duncan printed unit cards with colored circles on them. \u00a0These circles corresponded to colors on the figures&#8217; bases and made it easier for players to figure out which troops were theirs when the fighting got close.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/IMG_3712.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6608\" title=\"IMG_3712\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/IMG_3712-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>1940<\/h3>\n<p>Saturday morning I ran a German assault to capture Pomme du Terre from the French in 1940. \u00a0The French were supported by an AT gun and three FT-17s, only one of which was equipped with a gun rather than a machine-gun. \u00a0There Germans were supported by two Pz. II&#8217;s<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6610\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6610\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/IMG_3726.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6610\" title=\"IMG_3726\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/IMG_3726-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6610\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">German infantry advances to the outskirts of the town.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6611\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6611\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/IMG_3727.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6611\" title=\"IMG_3727\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/IMG_3727-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6611\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Advancing German armored support<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6612\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6612\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/IMG_3728.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6612\" title=\"IMG_3728\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/IMG_3728-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6612\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Close cooperation between German armor and infantry.  In this picture you can see the command dice on the units that are used in the Double Random (TM) activation mechanic used in Combat Patrol (TM).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Germans advanced steadily through the town but then got bogged down trying to clear the town square. \u00a0Had they advanced around either flank, rather than right up the middle, they might have gotten to the French AT gun and cleared the road. \u00a0The result was a French victory. \u00a0All the players seemed to really enjoy themselves.<\/p>\n<h3>1944<\/h3>\n<p>My second game in Pomme du Terre was an American attack on the town. \u00a0It was more of a meeting engagement as the Germans weren&#8217;t prepositioned in the town, but the onus remained with the attacker to clear the road. \u00a0The Germans had a Panzergrenadier platoon with halftracks, two Pz. IV&#8217;s and a Marder. \u00a0The Americans had an armored infantry platoon with halftracks, a Sherman, an M-10, and a Stuart. \u00a0The Americans had a bazooka as well as several captured Panzerfausts. \u00a0The forces were of roughly equal size.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6613\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6613\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/IMG_3744.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6613\" title=\"IMG_3744\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/IMG_3744-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6613\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Sherman advances<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Germans lost a Pz IV early in the game from a shot from the M-10. \u00a0The Marder was knocked out by a long-range bazooka shot. \u00a0On the other side of the table, the Germans got THREE shots off at the Sherman but rolled very poorly and didn&#8217;t knock it out. \u00a0They did damage the main gun, turning it into a mobile machine-gun platform. \u00a0The Americans handled their vehicles aggressively. \u00a0The combination of the Sherman, M-10, and Stuart kept the remaining German Pz. IV busy but didn&#8217;t knock it out by the time the game ended.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6614\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6614\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/IMG_3745.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6614\" title=\"IMG_3745\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/IMG_3745-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6614\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Marder knocked out by a long-range bazooka shot<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Both the American and German infantry advanced into the town and got into close quarters combat in and around the town square. \u00a0Despite heavy casualties, neither side managed to get a clear upper hand.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6615\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6615\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/IMG_3746.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6615\" title=\"IMG_3746\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/IMG_3746-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6615\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Sturt and a halftrack advance through the town<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A funny moment came when, after the left-flank Pz. IV was knocked out, an American halftrack dashed around the flank, dodging Panzerfaust shots, and circled behind the Germans. \u00a0Big surprise for Herman as their infantry started taking fire from three directions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/IMG_3747.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6616\" title=\"IMG_3747\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/IMG_3747-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Though the Germans didn&#8217;t knock out any US vehicles, they did knock out the 75mm gun not he Sherman. \u00a0The objective was for the Americans to control the road through town. \u00a0They didn&#8217;t manage to do this by the time the game ended, so we called it a marginal German victory.<\/p>\n<p>We had one player who struggled to get his head around the card mechanics of Combat Patrol(TM) and another who wanted to argue the ratings of guns and armor for some of the vehicles, but otherwise the weekend was a big success. \u00a0Many new players had a chance to try Combat Patrol(TM), and several went down and bought copies from the dealer hall &#8212; or at least said they did. \u00a0 I also had quite a few players who came back from either previous conventions or from previous games this weekend. \u00a0Every one of my games was completely full, and I even added a couple of extra players who really wanted to try the rules.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There were several Combat Patrol(TM) games run at Historicon 2017.
