{"id":8826,"date":"2019-06-28T16:25:10","date_gmt":"2019-06-28T16:25:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/?p=8826"},"modified":"2019-06-28T16:25:10","modified_gmt":"2019-06-28T16:25:10","slug":"hawaii-vacation-days-1-2-and-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bucksurdu.com\/bucksblog\/2019\/06\/28\/hawaii-vacation-days-1-2-and-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Hawaii Vacation, Days 1, 2, and 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Tuesday we began our family vacation to Hawaii. \u00a0This may be the last time we can go on a long vacation like this for some time due to Tom&#8217;s military schedule, Sam&#8217;s school, and Buck&#8217;s work so we wanted to do it up right. \u00a0Candy planned a full schedule of interesting events.<\/p>\n<p>The trip began in an interesting way, with a flood at BWI airport that brought down the baggage conveyor belt system. \u00a0This led to an hour delay to our departure. \u00a0We had a tight layover in Oakland, CA, but we made our flight to Hawaii. \u00a0We arrived in Honolulu airport around 8:30 PM in the midst of a torrential rainstorm that flooded roads all over the area. \u00a0There were three lighting strikes on people that day, two at the airport. \u00a0When we got our baggage, a lot of our stuff was wet. \u00a0The rental car facility was flooded, so they couldn&#8217;t use their computers for fear of electrical shock, they wrote down our information on a piece of paper and handed us the keys. \u00a0We arrived about 10:00 PM at the Hale Koa hotel, which is an Armed Forces Recreation Center on Waikiki beach, a prime location.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8830\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8830\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMGP6445.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8830\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMGP6445-678x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"755\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8830\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A view of the Hale Koa<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8829\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8829\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMGP6442.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8829\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMGP6442-1024x678.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"331\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8829\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A swell dude and his trophy wife under &#8220;Gus&#8221; where WWII began and ended<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We were flirting with rain all day. \u00a0We had planned to spend the afternoon on the beach at Waikiki, but with the rain, instead we chose to do some shopping for Hawaiian shirts at the Pearl Harbor Navy Exchange and wander around some of the shops in Waikiki. \u00a0We also enjoyed pina coladas at the Barefoot beachside bar (in the rain). \u00a0That evening, we took in a really good magic show in the Hale Koa Warriors Lounge. \u00a0Earlier that afternoon, Tom and I were in the lobby waiting for the girls, when the magician came up to us, saying &#8220;hey, I have this new trick I&#8217;d like to try out on you.&#8221; There were all kinds of signs saying &#8220;keep out,&#8221; but that is meant to keep the tourist traffic down, and our guide took us up to the falls. You can see how overcast it was all day.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8843\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8843\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMGP6499.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8843\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMGP6499-1024x678.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"331\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8843\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Some swell people posed in front of mountains that have been used in the various Jurassic Park movies<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Next we drove around the coast &#8212; after a stop at a Kona coffee and macadamia nut tourist trap (where we bought macadamia nuts!!) &#8212; to this interesting rock formation.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8846\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8846\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMGP6508.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8846\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMGP6508-1024x678.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"331\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8846\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The dragon&#8217;s eye<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ancient Hawaiian legends talk about two Hawaiian heroes \/ gods who defeated a giant lizard that was eating people. \u00a0This is supposedly the lizard&#8217;s head that was chopped off by one of the heroes.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8847\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8847\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMGP6513.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8847\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMGP6513-1024x678.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"331\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8847\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">You can see that the sky was overcast and the surf was pretty rough here. No one was foolish enough to be swimming here, and most of the people left as the rain began again.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8848\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8848\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMGP6521.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8848\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMGP6521-1024x678.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"331\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8848\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Candy and Tom enjoying some fresh fruit<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We stopped at a roadside farmer&#8217;s market and picked up some fresh pineapple, mango, and mixed fruit. \u00a0Our guide wanted us to try two local fruits. \u00a0The first is Lychee, which looks like a strawberry, but has a very tough skin that must be peeled before eating. \u00a0They were very sweet and very good. \u00a0The second was called a mountain apple, that had a peach-like pit and tasted more like a sweet pear. \u00a0Both were really, really good.<\/p>\n<p>Our next stop was 90 minutes of snorkeling around &#8220;Three Tables&#8221; beach were we swam with schools of fish and got very close to three sea turtles frolicking along the rocks. \u00a0We were probably one good kick away from being able to touch them!<\/p>\n<p>Then we drove to Waimea Bay to do some &#8220;safe cliff jumping.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 660px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('video');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-8826-1\" width=\"660\" height=\"371\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/New-Project.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/New-Project.mp4\">http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/New-Project.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p>This was a lot of fun. \u00a0Sammy surprised us by doing a forward flip! \u00a0I didn&#8217;t even know she could do that.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8852\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8852\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMGP6542.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8852\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMGP6542-1024x678.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"331\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8852\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Hawaiian Green sea turtle<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Our last stop was at a small stretch of beach where we saw this Hawaiian Green sea turtle. \u00a0It was 37 years old and weighed 225 pounds. \u00a0The park ranger had placed a rope on the beach to keep everyone at least a meter away from it.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8851\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8851\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMGP6546.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8851\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMGP6546-1024x678.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"331\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8851\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pineapple fields<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On the way back to Honolulu we drove through pineapple plantations. \u00a0The air had a pineapple aroma. \u00a0We had heard that pineapples weren&#8217;t grown on Hawaii any more. \u00a0It turns out that a LOT if pineapple is grown here, but it is not exported; it is all used in Hawaii. \u00a0The pineapple you find in Publix or Giant comes from Costa Rica. \u00a0I&#8217;m not sure my palate is sensitive enough to tell the difference, but the pineapple here SEEMS softer and slightly less tart that what we get in the grocery store.<\/p>\n<p>We had a really good day. \u00a0After an overpriced dinner we spent a half hour at the Hale Koa pool before collapsing in the room.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Tuesday we began our family vacation to Hawaii. \u00a0This may be the last time we can go on a long vacation like this for some time due to Tom&#8217;s military schedule, Sam&#8217;s school, and Buck&#8217;s work so we wanted to do it up right. \u00a0Candy planned a full schedule of interesting events.
