class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lookout from a cliff near the Makapu&#8217;u Lighthouse trail<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On day 4 of our vacation we began with a short drive to the Makapu&#8217;u Lighthouse trailhead. \u00a0The trail was about 1.5 miles mostly uphill to the point of land overlooking the lighthouse. \u00a0The lighthouse was built to prevent ships running aground while traversing the water between Oahu and Molokai.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8857\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8857\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMGP6568.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8857\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMGP6568-1024x678.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"331\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8857\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Makapu&#8217;u Lighthouse<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sam was decidedly unimpressed with this &#8220;dumpy little lighthouse&#8221; and didn&#8217;t think it was worth the uphill climb to get there. \u00a0 The views from up on the point were very nice.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8858\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8858\" style=\"width: 500px\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8870\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMGP6572.jpg\" Center.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Since the last time we visited the PCC, they have added a lot of shopping and food outside the center. \u00a0We bought some fancy hotdogs from a truck outside the gates (apparently food trucks are a big tradition in Hawaii). \u00a0Then we had to try some malasadas, which are like filled doughnuts. \u00a0We bought one of each flavor to share: \u00a0guava strawberry, chocolate, and coconut cream.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8869\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8869\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a traditionally constructed buildings, traditional crafts, and entertainment. \u00a0After our truck-lunch we entered the PCC just in time for the show on the water that runs through the center of the show. \u00a0The food was good, but we were disappointed the the kalua pig didn&#8217;t have much taste. \u00a0As that was what we were most looking forward to, we though the luau was &#8220;okay.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8872\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8872\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a (the highlight for us) fire jugglers. \u00a0The storyline was impossible to follow, as a Polynesian family transits from one island to another. \u00a0The storyline wasn&#8217;t that important however, as it was really about the various acts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Ha-Breath-of-Life-1.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8885\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Ha-Breath-of-Life-1-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You aren&#8217;t allowed to take pictures during the show, so these are ones I found online.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Ha-Breath-of-Life-7.jpg\" for some snorkeling. \u00a0We were worried that the crowds would be heavy on a Saturday morning, but we really didn&#8217;t feel crowded. \u00a0We rented snorkeling gear and had a really good time class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tom, Sam, and Trevor<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We didn&#8217;t get any pictures of any of us up on the board. \u00a0We were at least a quarter mile out (quite a swim!!), and they wanted $50 per person to provide a photographer.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8907\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8907\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMGP6704.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8907\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sam and Tom after surfing.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After a tiring day, we went back to the hotel and cleaned up for dinner. \u00a0We went to a local place, called The Goofy Cafe, for Mahi Mahi. \u00a0The food was great. \u00a0After dinner we walked to a local ice cream parlor and had ridiculously large ice cream desserts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMG_6359.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8893\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMG_6359-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"667\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The next day we got up early to check out of the Hale class=\"wp-caption-text\">Arriving at the big island of Hawaii<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After getting our rental car a the Hilo airport we drove to a farmer&#8217;s market outside town where we hand a nice lunch and picked up a bunch of fresh, local produce. \u00a0This was to make salad with our dinner in our cabin. \u00a0We then drove to Volcano National Park, took in the victor&#8217;s center, and checked into our cabin at the Kilauea Military Camp, inside the national park.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8921\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8921\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMG_6368-2.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8921\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMG_6368-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8921\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">On the way from Hilo to our cabin we stopped at a grocery store to buy stuff for dinner, breakfast, and lunch.
